About Coach Carter

I’m Carter, the founder of C3 Chess and a chess coach based in San Antonio. I’ve coached more than 100 students through schools, clubs, group classes, and private lessons.

If you or your child has never played before, that’s completely fine. Many of my students started without knowing how the pieces move. We’ll take our time with the basics and leave plenty of room for questions.

You don’t need a grandmaster as a coach to make real progress. Most of my experience is with beginners and intermediate players, up to around 1800 USCF or 2000 on Chess.com. I can help you review games, spot recurring mistakes, and give your practice more direction.

We work through positions, look at your games, and talk through decisions at the board. I want you to understand why a move works and feel comfortable explaining your ideas.

Progress depends a lot on the work you put in, especially between lessons. Regular practice makes a difference. Every private lesson includes a recap and progress notes. For more direction, the Training Plan adds personalized homework, specific assignments, and a lesson path we adjust as you improve.
